Frederick Wood was a gardener, employed at Calwich Abbey, the residence of Mr. A. C. and Lady Florence Duncombe, and he resided with his wife and two children at Knaveholme, Snelston. He enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters in June 1916, and was sent to France in the following November, where he was transferred to the Royal Irish Fusiliers. Shortly before his death, he was home on leave and was entertained at a social evening, along with other members of the Snelston church choir, by Mr. and Mrs. H. Stanton, of Snelston Hall.
